Screw Work, Play Golf!

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

A good post from golftimes:

The Greatest Moral of Any Story Ever Told
In 1923, Who Was:

1. President of the largest steel company?

2. President of the largest gas company?

3. President of the New York Stock Exchange?

4. Greatest wheat speculator?

5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?

6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their day. Now, 80 years later, the history book asks us if we know what ultimately became of them.

The Answers:

1. The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab, died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.

3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.

4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.

5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.

6. The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide.

However, in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and winner of a major golf tournament , the US Open, was Gene Sarazen. What became of him? He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death.

The Moral: Screw work. Play golf.

Amen!

50/50 for the weekend

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

I said that Jonathon Kaye was going to do well at the FBR Open - wrong!

110 days without rain - correct!

P.S. - I wish those Thunderbird people would get rid of those awful blue velour smocks or ponchos. So lame already. It is time for an update. I know they help the community with their good charity work - all the more reason to wear some cotton!

Prize Money gone wild

$936,000 for winning the Phoenix Open. Good work if you can get it. J.B.Holmes fresh from 6 rounds in the 60’s at the Q school where he walked away with the medal, the Phoenix Open seems like a walk in the park.

He won going away which is nice to see, winning by seven strokes. The guy can play.

The money - crazy! One tenth place finish and a win and J.B. Holmes becomes the fastest PGA player to win $1 million. It took Retief Goosen five tournaments to reach $1 million in 2001.

By the way, Tiger wins Dubai. Looked like a Phoenix golf course to me. This time it was Els that gagged in sudden death. The legend grows.

Awesome Day at the Phoenix Open

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

The perfect day to watch golf. Sunny, warm and no wind. My brother-in-law and I settled in at the 18th tee to watch the pro’s launch drives. Daly hit the longest of the day, but I think he missed the cut. He could care less.

We headed to the 16th - “The Loudest Hole in Golf” - and positioned ourselves against the ropes at the 17th tee, a reachable par 4 (338 yards, with the pin cut deep). The perfect spot to watch the tee shots and putting at the 16th and the drives at 17.

We heckled and boo-ed the ones that missed the green. Nowhere else is that accepted. On 17, the guys are driving the ball and it is like a hockey game - noise level. It is amazing how far off line they can hit balls when they miss. I thought that more guys would hit the green on 17. Maybe 2 out of 40.

Best swings - Mike Weir and Vijay Singh.

They are all in great shape now and it is amazing how different all the swings are when you get close and watch.

Looking forward to a weekend of Phoenix Open golf and the Super Bowl.

Friday at FBR

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

Heading to the 16th hole grandstands for the Friday round. Lot’s of local talent on the leaderboard after round 1.

I plan on following Jonathan Kaye for a few holes. I stopped by one of the PGA information computers the other day and read his bio. “He likes indoor activities and coloring”. You gotta love that those answers snuck past the stiff shirts at the PGA.

I think he plays well tomorrow to get into contention for the weekend.

By the way, Tom Lehman is looking 10 years younger. He had to have lost 40-50 pounds. Be nice to see him challenge. He looked like the friendliest guy at the pro-am.

Lot’s of players playing the Nike “Sasquatch”. What a awful name and awful looking driver. It helps that Tiger is pounding the ball with the ugly stick. Nike is making it’s mark on the PGA.

Mr. Daly - Wake Up!

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

A lot of people at the Open yesterday weer looking for Mr. Daly to walk up the 18th. It said so on their programs. NOT!
Most disappointed I am sure are the pro-am partners that ponied up $8,000 to play with him. At least it was a perfect day for golf - 106 and counting.

By the way, Tiger needs to shave hi little scraggly goatee. It makes him look chubby. Wonder what they are saying in Dubai?

Cheers
