Masters Green
So you need a new sports coat. What color are you going to get? Are you going to go for a classic black? How about a nice navy blue? Or even better, why not buy Masters Green? Let’s be realistic, you would NEVER go out and purchase a jacket that reminds you of St. Patrick’s Day or Will Farrell’s character in the movie “Elf,” and actually feel like you look good in it. But come every spring, it is the only thing that the golf world is talking about - The Masters and who will win the coveted Green Jacket. So I had to ask, what is the history behind this jacket?
It goes back to 1937 at the First Augusta National Invitation Tournament.
Members of the private club wore this jacket to stand out in a crowd so that fans knew who they could talk to if they had any questions. In only a couple of years the jacket became a staple for the tournament. Twelve years later, a tradition began and the Green Jacket was given to the winner of the tournament for the first time.
The members at Augusta consider themselves to be part of a private club and winners of the tournament become honorary members. Neither the members or the champions are allowed to remove the jackets from the premises. The only exception to this rule is the current champion can take it with permission, but only for a short period of time.
