WHERE DOES SANTA PLAY GOLF? CHRISTMAS ISLAND OF COURSE!
When Santa takes time off, he can be found on the sunny fairways of the Christmas Island Golf Course. The course is one of the most picturesque in the world. It is dominated by towering limestone cliffs, which provides an excellent backdrop to your game. The magnificent Indian Ocean keeps the breeze cool and if you are lucky you will see spinning dolphins, Golden Bosuns, and frigate birds that float in the up drafts over the coastline. The fairways are fringed with coconut trees which may “gobble” wayward balls. Red crabs can be seen scampering across the greens. Robber crabs lie in wait at the edge of the jungle and often mistake golf balls for coconuts.The Christmas Island Golf Club was established in 1955. It is nestled between dramatic cliffs, National Park and the Indian Ocean. The area selected was partly cleared by Prisoners of War during World War II. In 1954 a petition was presented to the Christmas Island Manager requesting permission to form a golf club. Members carried out construction of the course in their own time using equipment made available by the British Phosphate Commission. On 18 June 1955 the first official competition was held on the newly constructed six holes with sand greens. Since that time the course has been extended to nine holes and the sand greens have been replaced by grass.
