George Lopez: Lee Trevino Inspired Me To Play

Comedian George Lopez is stoked to play Pebble Beach next week, but without The Merry Mex Lee Trevino he says he would have never had the chance. Lopez tells Sports Illustrated that watching Trevino laugh, have fun and play golf, taught him a poor Mexican kid can get out there and make it on the course. Last September Lee and George played Pebble together, and something unique happened:
“As we strolled toward the green on Pebble’s 3rd hole, a downhill par-4, the sight of two Mexican golfers with white caddies caught the attention of the maintenance staff. All work stopped, and many of the laborers gathered to watch us play through. I realized that, in a way, Lee and I were walking symbols of opportunity for these men, who were working so hard to prepare the course — and to create a better life for their families.”
George will be puttin’ around in Carmel next week with fellow comedians Bill Murray and Adam Sandler. If you’re like most people, you’re not going to make it. So check out the non-stop live coverage, as the Arm Chair Golf blogger points out.
