Arizona match play is fun stuff, but the world o’ golf hasn’t seen anything as smokin’ hot as what’s going on down in Mexico. The first ever Mayakoba Golf Classic begins today in Playa Del Carmen, and whoa: talk about a party. Aside from everything awesome in this town, the El Camaleon golf course is one interesting piece of land. It begins with a bat filled cave called the Devil’s Mouth. The devils mouth is a cavern built long ago as part of a canal system. Developers found it when they built the resort community. As Fox Sports explains:
“It’s a bad place to be when you’re playing golf, but it might be a fun place to be with your girlfriend,” joked one caddie. Norman recommended doing more than just looking at it. “You can walk through all the bats and bat (droppings),” he said with a smile befitting his Shark nickname. “Go right ahead. I’ve done it.”
The Mayakoba is held in a town on Mexico’s Caribbean side. The place looks like it’s made for a postcard. It’s loaded with first rate hotels, restaurants, natural beautiful, a golf course, and the exact spot I should be hanging now:
