Was Dennis Golf Course Out Of Bounds Or Not?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Last week, Elaine Joyce challenged the Dennis Pines Golf Course in Cape Cod with a lawsuit after she and her father were not listed on the tee schedule after entering a club tournament. Joyce went on to challenge club officials to allow her to play in club tournaments with a men’s only policy. She filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination last July and recently filed suit in the U.S. District Court on February 15.

However, officials in Dennis were surprised of the most recent suit and say they changed rules at the public golf course to allow women to play in men’s tournaments months ago. Town Administrator Robert Canevazzi, who was named in the suit, said he tried to meet with Joyce to resolve the issue, but she never responded.

Joyce is suspicious of the claim and was not aware nor notified that the course’s Golf Advisory Committee voted to change its guidelines. Whatever the case, since her original suit Joyce claims that she has been “ostracized, marginalized, humiliated, embarrassed and denounced in a manner that has come to her at a very high personal cost.” She is requesting punitive damages in excess of $75,000.

A spokesperson for Joyce said she was confident that the two sides will be talking soon.

We’re giving away an OGIO stand golf bag today on GolfNow’s Trivia Contest

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Hi, everyone!

Okay, we didn’t intend to confuse anyone or intentionally give you a trick question on yesterday’s show regarding Phil Mickelson’s first victory as a professional. We felt that the wording was clear but we did receive a few comments saying that the wording was unclear and we did have a small split in the answers we received. 31% chose “A” - the 1991 Northern Telecom Open and then the majority - 63% to be exact - chose “B”, the 1993 Buick Invitational. So, to be fair, we’ll make sure that everyone who answered either “A” or “B” will get credit for a correct answer.

Our prize in yesterday’s drawing was a personalized wedge from Upswing Golf plus a dozen personalized Titleist Pro-V1 golf balls and our winner was Gary Gentile of Southington, Connecticut. Gary was lucky enough to see his name announced on the show and got in touch so we’ll be getting his prizes out to him right away.

“Everyday is a Good Day!”

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Tiger doubles his pleasure and Phil Mickelson talks about doubling his workout schedule.

“As we shorten the golf swing a little bit I need to have a little bit more explosiveness, a little more speed to keep up with the same distance and hopefully have more accuracy so I’ve had to strengthen lower body to be more stable and then I have to strengthen upper body to be able to accelerate and to have the rotational speed through impact.” ~Mickelson

Public Golf Course Says “Men Only”

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

The Dennis Pines Golf Course on Cape Cod is being sued by a female champion amateur golfer. Elaine Joyce, 43, was all set to tee off from the men’s tees in a tournament last May but course officials left her name off the tee sheet. Instead, the club’s head pro called her dad and said the tournament was not open to women. Umm, I did say she was 43 years old right?

Joyce, a member of Dennis Pines, complained to the town and course for months about the equality issues. After all, she had proven herself as a golfer, having won more than 20 club championships and maintaining a 3 handicap. Last Friday, however, she filed suit with the United States District Court in Boston against the Town of Dennis and three golf officials.

“If I’m going to play with people of similar abilities, the only way is to play with men.”

Women suing golf courses over tee times, memberships, men’s only access and issues in divorce is not a new thing. And, remember in 2003 when Annika Sorenstam entered a men’s PGA tour event as the first woman to do so since Babe Didrikson in 1945? She only lasted two-rounds.
