Vijay Captures First WCG Title
Believe it or not, until Sunday afternoon neither Vijay Singh nor Phil Mickelson had won a World Golf Championships title. Singh rolled in a three foot putt on the final hole to win the Bridgestone Invitational by one stroke over Stuart Appleby and Lee Westwood. He didn’t make it look easy however, as he was very shaky with the putter all week. Any time he had a four or five foot putt to make, it was anybody’s guess what was going to happen. All that matters - he made them when they counted, and he stepped into the winner’s circle for the first time since March of 2007.
Fan favorite Phil Mickelson was causing a lot of roars as usual. All week long he wowed the galleries with miracle shots around trees that led to birdies where most players would have been happy to escape with a bogey. About half way through the final round it looked as though Phil might take control of the tournament. But three bogeys on the last four holes shattered Mickelson’s chances and left him in a tie for 4th. Sharing that spot with Phil was Retief Goosen, who was looking like the “Loose Goose” we were so accustomed to seeing in previous years. Having slipped to 39th in the world rankings, Goosen seems poised to make a run at the PGA Championship and reclaim his position amongst the world’s elite players.
