Villegas Steps Up At PGA Tour’s Final Round

For the final round of the 2008 PGA Tour Championships, Sergio Garcia did not start off well. He had held a three stroke lead overnight, but started the final day by bogeying three of the first 10 holes before raising his game after the turn.

This was all Camilo Villegas needed to step up. He came from five strokes behind to seal his second successive PGA Tour title by beating Garcia in a sudden-death playoff. The winning two-putt par was worth an extra $1.5 million. The pair finished the 72 regulation holes on seven-under-par 273, Garcia parring the last for a 71 and Villegas closing with an eight-birdie 66.

Villegas also earned a $3 million bonus for finishing second to Vijay Singh in FedEx Cup points.

Camilo Villegas sure did manage it in style. From being ribbed about just being a pretty boy by his mates this man Columbia has come out and said the ‘pretty boy can win’. Without a doubt a wait of 85 starts seemed unreal for a guy like Villegas to come out with his first win but I am not sure anyone really expected this back to back win.

I cannot help but feel extremely sorry for Sergio Garcia who despite going into the final round with a three shot lead ended up as the bridesmaid once again but one can just feel that once he tastes blood he will be wrapping up more titles before you figure out wht hit you(or him for that mater)

The most interesting thing about the win was the amount of credit Camilo Villegas wanted to give his caddie. I thought the best caddies were those who knew when not to say something but in this case it seems the pep talk from the caddie made all the difference and that tremendous run on the last 11 holes which yielded 6 birdies.

It was a wonderful finish to the playoffs. Even the FedEx Cup winners name was leaked out before the tournament this has got to go down as one of the most closely fought tournaments with all the big names in contention going into the final few holes.
