90th PGA Championship Starts Today!

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Last chance to grab a Major title for the season as the 90th PGA Championship starts today! People have seemed to stop worrying about the possible excitement of the championships after 53-year old Greg Norman worked the fans at Royal Birkdale during the last one. So for this week, here are some things to watch for…

Anthony Kim – has adjusted nicely to life on the TOUR becoming a clear contender for the final championship. Self-admittedly immature, his game and maturity level alike are said to be growing “exponentially.”
Rocco Mediate – recovered from his dramatic playoff against Tiger Woods in the US Open and still playing hard for a Major win.
Adam Scott – went from playing with a broken pinky at Torrey Pines to further health problems after he reportedly contracted a fever and sore throat.
Steve Stricker – just changed drivers and hoping that will do the trick.
Jim Furyk – always steady, holding and near the top of the leaderboard.
Padraig Harrington – what are the chances that he pulls off the first PGA Championship title from a European since 1930?
Robert Karlson – the only one to finish in the top 10 for all three of this year’s prior Majors.
Vijay Singh – still riding high from last week’s title, don’t forget he is 4th in the World Golf Ranking and the holds the most PGA TOUR wins from an international player.
Sergio Garcia – long overdue for a Major win.

*Tiger did report to the Golf Channel that he was unhappy not to be returning as defender for the title, and that he would NOT be watching the tournament on TV.

Westwood Looking Good For PGA Championship

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

If this past week at Firestone is any indication, golf fans are going to be in for some excitement this coming week when the PGA Championship kicks off at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan. Some of golf’s biggest names seem to be in top form heading into the final major championship of the 2008 season. Lee Westwood is looking just as good, if not better, this summer than he ever has. Driving the ball long and incredibly straight off the tee, Westwood found himself in the lead early last Sunday. Rest assured, if his short game gets a little fine tuning, we can count on seeing him near the top of the leaderboard this weekend.

Vijay Captures First WCG Title

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Believe it or not, until Sunday afternoon neither Vijay Singh nor Phil Mickelson had won a World Golf Championships title. Singh rolled in a three foot putt on the final hole to win the Bridgestone Invitational by one stroke over Stuart Appleby and Lee Westwood. He didn’t make it look easy however, as he was very shaky with the putter all week. Any time he had a four or five foot putt to make, it was anybody’s guess what was going to happen. All that matters - he made them when they counted, and he stepped into the winner’s circle for the first time since March of 2007.

Fan favorite Phil Mickelson was causing a lot of roars as usual. All week long he wowed the galleries with miracle shots around trees that led to birdies where most players would have been happy to escape with a bogey. About half way through the final round it looked as though Phil might take control of the tournament. But three bogeys on the last four holes shattered Mickelson’s chances and left him in a tie for 4th. Sharing that spot with Phil was Retief Goosen, who was looking like the “Loose Goose” we were so accustomed to seeing in previous years. Having slipped to 39th in the world rankings, Goosen seems poised to make a run at the PGA Championship and reclaim his position amongst the world’s elite players.

Michelle Wie To Play On PGA Tour Again

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

After forgetting to sign her scorecard, Michelle Wie got disqualified from the State Farm classic last weekend. But that embarrassment is not enough to keep her down. Or, keep her focused on the LPGA. She simply refuses to concentrate on women’s competition alone. She announced yesterday that she would be going up against the men yet again at the Legends Reno – Tahoe Open later this month. This is the 8th time she has played on the PGA Tour.
