Top Golf Courses in Atlanta

The PGA TOUR’s season-ending Tour Championship, which determines the FedEx Cup champion, is conducted at Atlanta’s historic East Lake Golf Club, which was founded by the great Bobby Jones. But the club is more than just an exclusive country club with a historic legacy and represents one of the top golf courses in Atlanta.

 

Resurrected in the 1990s, East Lake has become not only a museum of sorts, housing so much great memorabilia from Jones and his cohorts, but it’s also a great success story. Together, with the efforts of the local businesses like Coca-Cola, this part of Atlanta has seen a golf renaissance, not only by the pros, but by the youth coming up in a First Tee program next door (with land donated by East Lake). In its modern version, East Lake represents Atlanta’s commitment to the game as well as its community. And it personifies an area rich in golf, not only in its private clubs like East Lake and Atlanta Athletic Club (or Augusta National not far away), but a wide range of public and resort courses, too.

 

Top Golf Courses in Atlanta (Metro Area)

 

The various parts of the city offer a great wide range of links, from the courses built around the vineyards at Chateau Elan Golf Course in Braselton to the Tom Fazio-designed The Frog Golf Club just west of the city, to Bear’s Best in Suwanee (which represents a compilation of the very best Jack Nicklaus designs). Alpharetta is one of the more significant suburbs north of the city and serves as home to some of the top golf courses in Atlanta such as Country Club of the South, Atlanta National Golf Club, Trophy Club of Atlanta and the Golf Club of Georgia.

 

There’s also plenty of top quality golf in and near to the city, like the popular John A. White Park Golf Course and Bobby Jones Golf Course. And just 30 minutes from downtown, Stone Mountain Golf Club is one of the most popular public offerings in the Atlanta area. The facility has two courses that wind through a forest of Georgia pines and around Stone Mountain Lake. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the original Stonemont Course is the more difficult of the two layouts, while the newer Lakemont Course, designed by John LaFoy, is a more resort-style track and offers some of best views on the carving side of Stone Mountain.

 

Other top golf courses in Atlanta include the Arnold Palmer-designed Cherokee Run Golf Club in Conyers (pictured above), Cobblestone Golf Course along Lake Acworth northwest of Atlanta, the Audubon Signature course, Summer Grove Golf Club in Newnan, and Fox Creek and Legacy Golf Links in Smyrna, which is close SunTrust Park, the new stadium home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
