If the endless supply of sweet tea and delicious down home cookin’ weren’t enough, the south is also a golfer’s dream when it comes to course selection. With more courses than you can shake a stick, or club, at, picking just a few of our favorites to share with you was a tough task. We’ve narrowed it down to 10 must-play courses that will have you headin’ down south for the summer.
TPC Sawgrass (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) – Host of the THE PLAYERS Championship, TPC Sawgrass brings championship caliber golf to the public. The northern Florida golf club boasts two beautiful and challenging courses: the Stadium Course and the Valley Course. Both are designed by renowned golf course architect Pete Dye. After your round, grab a bite to eat at their award-winning restaurant, Nineteen.
Ponte Vedra Golf & Country Club At Sawgrass (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) – The elegant Florida community of Ponte Vedra Beach is home to some of the Southeast’s greatest golf destinations. Just steps from the ocean, Ponte Vedra Golf and Country Club features tree-lined fairways, undulating greens that demand accuracy and a sea breeze that factors into the difficulty of play.
St. Marlo Country Club (Duluth, Ga.) – Water comes in to play on 9 holes at St. Marlo, with waterfalls, stone walls, and beautiful hardwoods that flow with the natural Georgia terrain. A favorite among the locals, St. Marlo Country Club is the perfect southern golf experience, just outside of busy Atlanta.
Coweta Club at Arbor Springs (Newnan, Ga.) – The mix of challenging play and natural scenic beauty make Coweta Club a must-play in Georgia. With the surrounding dramatic terrain at the focus, golfers of all levels will enjoy a visually stunning playing environment and a unique, rewarding round. Visit the clubhouse and event space after your round and unwind with exquisite panoramic views of the 147-acre course.
Charleston National Golf Club (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) – This Rees Jones-designed course is carved along the Intracoastal Waterway, through natural wetlands and lagoons. Golfers will encounter many pines and oaks over the 7,100 yard course, with wooden bridges throughout, giving Charleston National a true southern feel. Enjoy the suburban Mount Pleasant and the city of Charleston nearby.
Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) – Sand and water are at every turn at this Nicklaus-designed course. One of Hilton Head’s best, the Golden Bear Club at Indigo Run is a game of strategy and finesse, rather than sheer power. When you’re not on the course, make sure to take advantage of the surrounding island beauty.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course (Raleigh, N.C.)– Located on the campus of North Carolina State University, Lonnie Poole Golf Course is unique southern golf experience in the community of Raleigh. As an Audubon International Signature Golf Sanctuary, Lonnie Poole Golf Course not only fulfills a recreational and athletic role but also provides the university with a functioning laboratory for research and teaching.
The Neuse Golf Club (Clayton, N.C.) – With its rock outcroppings, rolling hills and serene location next to the Neuse River, The Neuse Golf Club in Clayton, N.C. is an exciting golf experience with surprises waiting at every hole. The Neuse says to expect rocks, rolls, twists, and turns, all with a beautiful, sunny location.
Crosswinds Golf Club (Savannah, Ga.) – With its open, spacious fairways and private club feel, Crosswinds Golf Club is an enjoyable and challenging round for golfers of all levels. Just minutes from the historic Downtown Savannah, visitors can enjoy all that the “Hostess City of the South” has to offer.
