With a little extra challenge thrown in by the ocean and bay breezes, Montauk Downs is a picturesque state park setting for a rewarding round. Located on Long Island’s south fork, the scenery and location are excellent, giving you a chance to encounter wildlife and beautiful views at nearly every turn. Plus, the elevated greens and layout can provide plenty of tricky situations if you’re not careful with your shots.
Dating back to 1937, Mark Twain Golf Course is classic public course that offers a relaxing round and a good mix of challenges as well. At just a shade under 7,000 yards from the blue tees, Mark Twain isn’t one of the longest New York golf courses you’ll play, but it does offer an excellent test of your irons and approach shots. And the multi-tier greens will make sure that you bring your “A” game when putting, too.
Willow Creek Golf & Country Club
Willow Creek Golf & Country Club in Mount Sinai is another great track on Long Island, this one situated on Suffolk’s north shore. With a great look and nearly 100 bunkers, Willow Creek is sure to keep you entertained throughout your entire round. Water hazards can also be found on 12 of the holes, making this a New York golf course where you’ll have to plan every shot carefully.
Found in western New York’s finger lakes region, Ravenwood Golf Club offers a challenge that gently sneaks up on you during the course of your round. The front nine eases you into the experience, with the gently undulating terrain and expert layout providing an excellent flow from one hole to the next. Once you make the turn, though, the back nine includes several par-3 holes and water hazards that are worth a second look before selecting your shot.
Atunyote Golf Club at Turning Stone
One of the gems of Vernon, New York, Atunyote Golf Club at Turning Stone is a golfer-favorite Tom Fazio design that draws inspiration from the one and only Augusta National. Stunning views and immaculate conditions help distract you from some of the challenges that await, including well-placed bunkers, water hazards, and greens that can roll pretty quick depending on the day you play.
Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course
Built in 2010, Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course is one of the newer golf courses in New York, and is frequently recognized as one of the best. Native grasses and mature trees offer golfers a tranquil setting during their round, and five sets of tee boxes allow any golfer to enjoy the beauty and challenges this unique layout has to offer.
