Happy Memorial Day
As we pause and reflect on today’s commemoration, we remember the many sacrifices of the brave men and women who have served our country. We would like to thank the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard for continuously protecting our right to freedom.
With this, we are wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day! Here’s a look at some of the influential golfers that have dedicated part of their lives to the United States Military.
Bobby Jones
Most famously known for his victories in all four major tournaments in 1930, Bobby Jones was also an officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces. Jones’ love for the game lead him to build Augusta National Golf Club on land purchased in Georgia. This golf course was later converted into grounds used to support cattle and turkeys while Jones was serving in WWII, from 1943-1945.
Tony Lema
Tony Lema, better known as “Champagne Tony,” enlisted in the military at the young age of 17. Guidance from a coach and mentor during his teen years lead to Lema’s passion for golf, and motivation to join the Marine Corp Golf team. Once Lema’s time in the Marine Corps came to a close, he taught and played golf at different golf clubs until he joined the PGA Tour. Lema’s golf career resulted in 12 PGA tour wins, which included an Open Championship victory in 1964.
Lee Trevino
With 29 PGA Tour victories, six of which were majors, Lee Trevino made his mark on the golf community. Also leaving his mark on our country, Trevino served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He credits his love for golf and even his promotion to lance corporal, to the many days he spent being a playing partner to Marine Corps Officers.
Patty Berg
Before leaving her career of golf to serve as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, Patty Berg achieved 57 wins during her successful golf career. She was also one of the original founders of the LPGA, and had 15 Major Championship victories. Today, she is a role model and inspiration to professional women golfers nationwide.
We hope that you enjoy an extra day and an extra round while remembering those military members with a little bit extra gratitude!
